Last night the Planning Commission voted to keep the Westmoreland Shopping Center zoned SPUD instead of reverting it back to C-1. This is a small victory, as the Cangelosi family merely seeks to zone it to whatever will get it sold as quickly as possible. C-1 zoning will allow that, but would permit the building of a big box retailer or other uses incompatible with the Mid City area. SPUD is a slightly more involved zoning designation that basically requires the developer to employ higher densities and more smart growth principles key to improving our area.
